Taifu's trait options are Toxic Farewell and Resilient. With these similarities in learnset AND in stats, but with no means to make it sufficiently different to the others, Taifu is completely forgotten and forever banished to the Temtem shadow realm. Take 5 DEF out of Loali and put it on HP and you have the exact same base defenses as Taifu, but with 1 extra point in SPDEF. The two stats are basically just swapped. Compare Taifu to Loali specifically - Taifu has 5 more base HP but 5 less base DEF. Loali is almost exactly in the middle at 80. The lowest is Vulffy at 70 (which is still above average) and the highest is Taifu at 87. You hit them with physical attacks instead of special ones. All three have the same stat-based weaknesses. Note how all three are low HP, low DEF, high SPDEF tems. Loali has 1 more total stat, so it's as close as identical as you can possibly get. Taifu and Vulffy have an identical amount of their total base stats spread over their defenses. Let's look at stat distribution - specifically around the HP, DEF and SPDEF stats.ДЄs we can see from above, all three have almost identical amounts of stats put into their defenses. What I'm trying to say here is that there's far too much overlap and repetition between these three tems, and being the worst of the three, Taifu fails to stand out and loses out to either of these options when building a team. It ALSO has Botanist to make it EVEN BETTER at the nature damage side of things, meaning that even if Taifu got Resin Trap, it'd still be worse than Loali. It gets STAB on both, so it does both of these things better than Taifu can do since it does the Hypo better and Taifu can't do the nature damage at all. Taifu can use Hypoxia to protect itself from toxics, but Loali has special nature (Resin Trap), AND it has Hypoxia.

No other nature type is able to do both of these things at the same time. Dust Vortex helps it to threaten fires, while Hypoxia allows it to threaten toxics. One of the coolest, more defining qualities of Taifu, from a gameplay perspective is its coverage to threaten its counters. I think that the root of this problem is that Taifu has lots of competition in the special nature type role, and its two main competitors do what it does, and more, and better. I think it has more than one problem, and I'd like to lay them all out, but I think the main one is a lack of identity. As a result, this will cover Taifu alone, and I'll come to Shuine and Mudrid later on this week. However, after multiple hours of writing and editing, and a 2000+ word essay on Taifu alone, I decided to split this up into multiple parts.
